THE OLDEN DAYS

<>
I have OLDEN DAYS.

Thursday night I watched Ryleigh, Ellie, and Ashton while Chris and Erna had a date night.

We have a bedtime routine at the Ray house. Scriptures, two stories and then singing.

Thursday they asked me something different, they wanted me to tell them about the olden days.

I didn't think I had olden days, that was something my grandparents had, oh ya, I am a grandparent. So when I asked what they meant, Ry said, "well did they have cars when you were young".

No, we just saddled up a DINOSAUR!

I laughed at that one but got to thinking and here is what I told them:

We didn't have computers.

WHAT...they were shocked.

And the television wasn't in color, just black and white. With no remote. If you wanted to change the channel or turn it off or on you had to get up off the chair, walk over to the tv and do it by hand. And there were only 5 channels to choose from, 3, 5, 8, 10 and 12. (And I'm really not sure there was an 8)

When we needed gas in the car we didn't go to Circle K or QT, we went to the gas station. There was a hose on the drive and when you drove over the hose it went "ding, ding" and then the man inside knew you were there and he would come out of the office and ask what you needed. You would say filler up with Ethel and while the gas was pumping the man would check your oil and water and then wash you windows all while you just sat in the car.

And then there was the milkman.

The milkman would come to the back door and leave the milk by the doorstep. Ry said, "he would just leave the jug there". Oh no, the milk didn't come in a plastic jug, it came in a recyclable glass bottle and we would put the empty bottles out on the day he came and he would replace them with full bottles, take the empties and refill them for next time. If I remember correctly, he would even bring cottage cheese. I think he would even come in if you were home and put it in the fridge for you.

Ry even knew that in the olden days, my phone was tied to the wall. But she was shocked when I told her that my phone number was BROADWAY 6-3809. And the girls really got a chuckle out of the "party line" and that we had to pick up the phone and listen to see if anyone else was using it before we would rotary dial our call.

Oh man, I just remembered about the record player and 33s, 45s and 78s.
No MP3's in the olden days.

What do you remember about the OLDEN DAYS?
