7-9-08 RECAP OF 4TH OF JULY WEEKEND

Finally an update on our 4th of July weekend.
Callie and I picked up Ryleigh and Ellie about 9am on Friday. We (the 4 of us) drove to Winslow in Callie's car. Clayton had to work until noon so Derril stayed behind to wait for him. The deal was that Clayton wanted to ride to Winslow on his motorcycle. Me, being the overprotective mother that I am, insisted that Derril follow him in the van. Yes, I know that gas is over $4 a gallon. Derril was getting the van ready for the trip, checking fluids and tire pressure and such on the van when he noticed a problem with the water pump. He ended up changing the pump, so they didn't get on the road until 3. Callie and I had an uneventful trip. The girls watched the video 'All Dogs Go to Heaven' on the way up. The weather was beautiful once you hit Flagstaff. Beautiful heavy rain clouds. So different from the dry hot desert. Clayton did ride his motorcycle without incident, unless you count getting pummeled with hail in Flag. The girls had a blast with Danielle and Luke. They jumped and jumped and jumped on the trampoline.
We ate sub sandwiches for dinner and enjoyed the fireworks from Heidi's front yard. They are set off from the high school on the block just east of Heidi's house. So the fireworks are really close and loud. Ryleigh enjoyed them after she got use to the noise and Ellie sat on my lap and watched with her hands over her ears and then on Callie's lap she fell sound asleep and slept peacefully through most of the show.
Danielle still won't even come out of the house to watch the show. She is so terrified of the noise and swears she will NEVER EVER go to Disneyland after Heidi told her that they have a fireworks show every night there.
The tramp is a real gathering place at Heidi's. Derril, me, Ryleigh, and Ellie all slept on the trampoline. The weather was cool and we woke to rain on our faces in the morning. We also slept on the trampoline the next night and Danielle joined us. The second night it was down right freezing. On Saturday Clayton took us for rides on his motorcycle. I went, as did Heidi, Luke, Steven, Callie, and even Bob took his ride to work on the back of the motorcycle.
It was my first ride on the back with Clayton driving. And he would laugh as I would clench my fists into his sides when he would top out at 25 mph. Heidi said she didn't let him go over 15 mph and thinks it made him struggle with balance. Steven and Clayton rode the most and Clayton took him to the church parking lot and Steven drive it himself. We did our usual shopping and eating and also went to the Railroad Park for a few pictures.
The weather was so nice in the afternoons with the clouds rolling in. Heidi thought it was hot but us desert rats really enjoyed what we thought of as cool weather. All the little ones really enjoyed the cool of the pool.
We came back home on Sunday. Getting back to Phoenix about noon. Clayton and Derril didn't get home until later because they stopped by meteor crater. And again Clayton was pelted with marble size hail on the way through Flagstaff. Oh, and he did come home with a motorcycle sunburn (where his gloves stopped halfway up his arms).

"Great pictures, I love that you guys camped out on the trampoline! Callie looks like a model in her motorcycle shot, but for what product? Shampoo or maybe clothes? A funnier twist would be men's deodorant ;) "

"I loved reading about your 4th! The second time I checked it out there were more pictures than the first time I looked. I really enjoyed the pictures and the details of the visit. We spent the 4th at the movies. We saw Get Smart, from the very front seats. Maybe we would have enjoyed it more if we could have been back a little farther. On the 5th we saw the new Indiana Jones movie and really like it. I loved Lindsay's comments!"

"Sounds like great fun. The pictures are fantastic. I'll have to worn Lori about Flagstaff and hail."
