YOUNG WOMEN ACTIVITY 8-20-08

Wednesday night, at church, is activity night for the Young Women. I am the secretary in the YW program. Our YW President could not be there this week and asked me to be in charge of the activity. I wanted to do something that would remind the YW to work on their 'Personal Progress' and came up with the idea of making a Value Bracelet. It would have gone better probably if I had ever made such a thing before. I went to the infamous Hobby Lobby store and a few days later found the ultimate bead store, Beads Galore. If I had more time in my life I might be find jewelry making a fun hobby. The bracelet the girls made had faceted beads for each of the seven YW Value colors.
the Value bracelet
White for faith, blue for Divine Nature, red for Individual Worth, green for Knowledge, orange for Choice and Accountability, yellow for Good Works, and purple for Integrity. Each value has 6 experiences the girls are supposed to complete and one value project. So I told the girls that as they complete a value experience they can add a charm of coinciding color to the bracelet, making it a charm bracelet.
bracelet and charms
I had also bought a bracelet that was made of pearls with silver
FAITH bracelet
spacer beads that could be a 'FAITH' bracelet. I made charms for it, with each charm a letter spelling out the word 'faith'. Another idea I had was to make a bracelet for each individual value. So you could have a pearl bracelet, a red bracelet, green bracelet, etc. Then you could add color charms as they finish each value experience. The older girls seemed to enjoy the activity. The younger girls, both 12, had trouble and needed help. They enjoyed the finished product but the attention span just wasn't there. I thought I was pretty clever myself when I used wooden rulers as a bead board, it had the perfect size groove cut into it that fit the beads. I handed out dish towels to each girl which also worked well to trap any runaway beads. Except for the one 12 year old who found it more entertaining to sit in her chair sideways and string her beads over her lap instead of over the table with the towel on it. She is also the only one who, when almost finished, spilled her entire bracelet and had to start over.
Hmm, Christmas gifts??
